Feel safe in Alanya
Turkey is located in a relatively seismic area on the small Anatolian plate. The country is squeezed in between three other major tectonic plates: The north-moving African and Arabian plates located to the south, and the south-moving Eurasian plate located to the north. The staggering of these plates is pushing the Anatolian plate to move west into the Aegean Sea. This movement produces fault structures at the boundary between the plates, thus causing seismic activity in Turkey every now and then.
Turkey is divided into five different hazard zones. Out of these, the 1st zone is the most active one and the 5th is the least active one. Alanya is located in a zone ranked 4th, and is therefore not in danger of having any major earthquakes.
To make earthquake resistant buildings, constructors need to pay attention to the natural vibration of the building. Earthquakes cause sideways forces, and in order to minimize the amount of damage caused by any earthquakes, horizontal diaphragms are made up from a horizontal frame covered by a floor or roof deck.
When a diaphragm is stiff enough in its horizontal plane, it is able to share the sideways earthquake forces on a building through the vertical structures like columns, beams, walls and bracing. These structures transfer the sideways forces on the building down to the ground.
Despite the city’s situation in an area of relatively low seismic activity, you are still obliged to have insurance which also covers any damage caused by seismic activity when you buy property in Alanya.
